Teen Issues

Wanna join the new fad? Don’t.

Self mutilation has become something like the “next big thing”. There are so many teens cutting, carving, scratching and harming themselves. Some teens may think its cool, while others have a “valid” yet still invalid reason as to why they harm themselves. Although cutting, etc. because one thinks it is “cool” is not truly self mutilation, it should be seen that way, because either way, the person is causing harm to themselves. Studies show that some believe that self mutilation attempts can mean anything to someone from relaxation, to coping techniques, even to illness or disease. Self mutilation is seen in many different forms such as branding, burning, marking, bruising, hitting, and even picking or pulling skin and hair.  Whether a person who does not self mutilate finds it crazy or out of the question, they may not understand what the people who actually do practice self mutilation go through, and should more than likely shoot for helping the people out instead of looking down upon them. Self mutilation could ease the mental pain from psychological problems that one may have. According to studies, some people give the reason that it gets rid of their jitters or helps them cope with issues they are going through in their lives. It is somewhat easy to understand the reason why these people harm themselves, but why they would take that measure instead of others is what most people don’t understand. Many teens do not know how to  express themselves emotionally, which is another reason given as to why people self mutilate, however, that still does not seem like reason enough to harm one’s self.  Many parents do not know that their kids harm themselves because the marks are easy to hide, however, if the parent does know, there are ways to help out. One way to help out is to show yourself being a strong person in extenuating circumstances, as well as seeking professional help or showing their teen how much they care and understand. Sometimes, the simplest things can help out the most and parents, whom obviously have been teens before in their lives, seem to not understand.   Random fact:::Studies show many people, teens included, self mutilate. As a matter of fact, 17% of Ivy League students have “cut” once, if not multiple times. -Tatijana

I think that this is an interesting topic and i do understand why people dont understand becuase i am one of them. I know how precious my body is and the things that i can do with it becuase that’s the way that i was raised. But, to see people hurting themselfes because ir relieves them of this and that is really hard for me to understand. I guess i would have to know more i wonder why they cant just go read a book. But nice article

I beleive that self mutilation is one of the most dumbest things you can do to yourself. Sure, it may ease the “pain” in your membrane, but there’s so many other SAFER ways you can do that. If anyone knows someone who does self mutilate themselves, get them help asap! If you care about them, then you’d go tell someone, their parents, anyone!

Theres this really good organization that i know of, that everyone should help fund and support. They’re call “To Write Love On Her Arms”. It’s just an organization trying to help and prevent kids who cut and/or are suicidal. For more information, please visit their website.

That is pretty interesting. In my opinion, I think cutting or harming ones self is immoral and that, like you said, should be helped and not just looked down upon. I can’t believe it though how teens will harm themselves for no reason, and even with a reason like “jitters” or stuff like that, I don’t think they should and they should go and get some sort of help that could help them mentally and save them physically.

Very informative. This is an issue facing teens that rarely gets attention. Though I do believe that some people have a genuine reason to be depressed to the point of cutting, I do not think that it’s the best option. If you’re to a point where this is an appetizing option, it may be time to be consider some professional help or talk it out with someone.

Cutting, burning, slashing, marking all apart of this fad.
But all of this is the original result of being depressed when one truly has a level of self hatred or a desire to harms oneself it is not a fad it problem and in radical terms disease.
But not anymore the act of being depressed has become “the thing” and the act of self-mutilation is ‘cool’?
How on earth did we get here how did we get to the point where the pain of our friends, family, and our neighbors a mark to be warn as a piece of memorabilia?
And how can we help the people who truly have this problem in their lives?!
Self-mutilation is a way to destroying yourself and making it a culture we deny those who need the help.

I dont know how those people can cut themselves. I dont think that i could ever purpously mutilate my own body. THese kids need help and i think that cutting is just a cry for attention and help. Someone should take the time to talk to these kids and understand their problems.

Good post! I especially agree with your point that people who cannot understand or relate to such behavior should try not to look down upon people who practise it. I hear kids making fun of “cutters” all the time, as part of a generalized “emo kid” stereotype, and I really find it insensitive to a very real problem.

This is a very good topic, I do understand why people can hurt themselves, but I mean, I wish that their body and mind were stronger so that they wouldn’t have to go through so much pain, physically and mentally. Sadly, I know some people that have been “cutters” and it’s very sad as to why they were, and/ or still are. I’ve heard their stories and I know their lives, and I feel so bad for them. For anybody who does hurt themself, I wish they would learn to express their feelings more instead of taking it our on themselves. This is a really important topic, and a good blog.

dood, i hate people that cut.
it’s so pointless because all ur doing is hurting yourself
you think your life is so terrible and you wanna get attention so you cut urself
there’s kids in Africa that are in pain evereyday and their lives are ruined by their government and they’re really poor.
those arre the kids that should be cutting themselves, not the stupid scene kids

This is really bad, i never realized how many people do that kind of stuff. Although i don’t think that pulling hair out or just pulling your kin should be compared to cutting and the other more harmful things. The statistic about 17% of ivy league students admit to cutting at least once is crazy, and i’d bet that there are more that don’t admit it. I think schools and parent should be monitoring this more especially when cutting is so common now.

Self mutilation is a very important topic facing our young people today. Cutting makes you look ‘cool’ or so they say. People who cut to be cool are pretty stupid because how does it make you look cool? hurting yourself to be popular. that’s ridiculous and doesnt make sense to me. But i guess teens these days do many things just to be cool that dont make sense to me.

Usually people think the only form of self mutliation is cutting so I thought that it was good that you focused on the other kinds of self mutilation also. Even though the statistic says that 17% of ivy league students admit to cuuting at least once, it probably isn’t true becuase there are probably a lot more studenst that don’t want to admit to cutting.

crazy! Some teens cannot handle their feelings….I think that some teens feel like if they talk about their problems to their parents or friends they will not listen or they will think they are crazy. This makes sense too because teens in some ways are not listened to. Teens can be stereotyped as dramatic or looking for attention but sometimes the attention is needed!
I totally think that there are plenty of people that have cut at least once, I know plenty of people!
    Sad.

I don’t think that self mutilation is a legitimate way to ease pain. I just don’t see the point to ease emotional pain with pgysical pain. Doing harm to your body on purpose is such a stupid idea, there are other ways to cope with emotional pain. I think that teens are coming up with very twisted ways to hadle things, I think that teens need to think things through more carefully and try to think about how they’re taking things. I really do believe that self-mutilation is a form of potential suicide and I think that people who harm themselves should look for help with their situation.

I am one of the people who believe that self mutilation is a stupid and unnecessary act. I never really understood why people would inflict pain on themselves. There have been times where I have thought about hurting myself but when the time came I backed out because I was afraid. When I hurt myself by accident, I get angry at myself. After reading this blog, I will begin to look at those type of people differently because I understand that they may be performing these acts because of an illness. I am no longer going to just marvel at these people, I will take it upon myself to help them.

Self Mutilating. how stupid. people can ease their pain in other ways, like counselors or therapy. you dont need to ease your pain by cutting yourself. you can end your life forever that way. its not worth it to cause physical pain for your mental pain. people should learn that people care about them, and that there are other solutions. great jobs.
